Starting at 1,100 for the green-dial version on a rubber strap, the 151/153 are 42. While the limited-edition with blue dial and black bezel known as the SPB149 has been obsessing some of us (me) since last month (there goes any pretense of journalistic objectivity), Seiko yesterday announced new variations, including non-limited models. Indeed, the SPB14X was not the only heat to be added to the SPB range this year, as Seiko also launched a re-issue of their vintage 6105 diver in the SPB151 and SPB153. Seiko named this sequence the 1965 Diver’s Trendy Re-Interpretation. Even higher, the SPB149 proved to be a part of a sequence of 4 watches itself, the SPB143, 145, 147, and the 149. The new models feel much closer aesthetically to the original 62MAS, with a moderately sized 40.5mm case and accessible prices starting at $1,000. Seiko 1965 Diver’s Trendy Re-Interpretation. The end result is not fancy, but it does wear well and feels solid without overpowering the watch. Now, however, they seem to have finally nailed it. The SPB143's case and lug shape are not exactly ideal for a bracelet, but Seiko has opted for a simple and rugged solid end link and a link shape that tapers towards the clasp. It made perfect sense for Seiko to bring it back, but its return has been a mixed bag: With a rather expensive, limited-edition recreation as well as modern reinterpretations that are, well, handsome enough, the brand has played around with the concept quite a bit.
